Do the United States comprise a Christian nation?

I'm reading an older book, "America's Christian History: The Untold Story" by Gary DeMar. The book is well documented and aggregates historical records, quotes, and commentary to make a pretty solid case for the assertion that:
  • A) most if not all states in the union were developed upon commonly understood biblical principles,
  • B) the federal government, being a collection of these biblically based states, also reflected a reliance on God and His Scriptures.
  • C) though a relatively recent development, the courts, text books, and media have effectively whitewashed over historical truth so that most U.S. citizens are under the delusion that God had nothing to do with the founding of this country.

Here are some facts I found interesting:

  • Words of Jefferson (3rd President) upon his memorial: God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? In deed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever."
  • Lincoln (16th President) appointed on April 30, 1863, a "National Fast Day". An excerpt from his declaration: "It is the duty of nations as well as of men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God , to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon, and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history: that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord." This last phrase is from Psalm 33:12.
  • Andrew Jackson (7th President) declared the Bible to be "the rock on which our republic rests."
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt (32nd President) said of the Bible: "where we have been truest and most consistent in obeying its precepts, we have attained the greatest measure of contentment and prosperity."

If only those nations are blessed whose God is the Lord and justice from the Lord will come, when will we, as a nation, repent? Is it too late?

Along the same lines of Thomas Jefferson who has been misquoted about the seperation of church and state through out our most recent history. In his writtings he never meant for the church to be taken out of government, what he was trying to avoid was the the government in the church. One reason so many left England to the new world was King Henry forced the English to worship his new religion, the Church of England. This great country was built upon Christian principals and can be found in many documents we hold dear. I find it amazing that in a country where the majority rule, so many minorities over rule the majority. For example, pray in school, one father in California disagrees and the federal courts take it from all American families. These fundamental principles in our American doctrine must be protected through our Christian voice and vote to help combat organizations like the ACLU and others.
