From reality to big dreams

  • Although restrooms shouldn't be a big deal, they are! As my Facilities Director put it, they should be "pristine". And, I agree. These should be clean, functional, attractive and pleasant smelling. While this seems like a no-brainer, it isn't always so. We received much feedback on them from the weekend. But now, we're kickin' it up a notch (or two)! Those who visit our building, especially on the weekend, should see/smell cleanliness and good functionality from these common places.
  • Billboard #2 should be up soon. I'm looking forward to seeing it and hearing the buzz it might cause...
  • Vision! It becomes more obvious with each position I take, that the "vision thing" is key to ensuring not only that everyone is on the "same page" but that the right decisions are being made for the right reasons! This is a hot topic of discussion between John and me that he's also fired up about. It's fun to dream BIG and we must be diligent to not let the tyranny of the urgent get in the way of our BIG dreams. And, John's dream for Central Community is HUGE!!!

Actually, this quote was from a few weeks ago: "I didn't know you were a pastor. I just thought you were someone being nice." The woman who said it is genuinely kind - and I know she meant it in the very best way. The situation to which she referred concerned a pastor who helped her on her first Sunday get her kids to their Sunday School Classes. However, it got me thinking. Expectations of a pastor can be low. We're too busy to care. Or, in a more fair fashion, we have a lot on our plates and can't be bothered with something that the volunteers should be doing. Especially, on Sunday morning. Being nice - even in church - is an anomaly to some. Lord, help us (all of us) to never be too busy to act in mercy and grace. Fill us with a desire - indeed, a passion - to help. What do you think?

Beauty in the backyard...

We are thoroughly enjoying the spring this year. In our part of the world, it is green, green, green. While we know that humidity comes with the green, we are enjoying the beauty of the growing world around us - especially, in our backyard. However, the growing comes not only in color but in sound. We have so many birds in our backyard. Loud ones, too. And, an owl. God is so good. If we wait on Him and listen, He speaks. Even through the sights and sounds of spring.

Declaration Time

This week, my son Lewis enjoyed his last day of High School.  Wow.  It's hard to believe that he's 18 and ready to complete a major milestone in his life.  In addition to graduating from High School, I chose this time to hold a ceremony of sorts to declare our common understanding of what it means to be a man. In a previous post , I wrote how I believe that men of God are called to obey His will, work as He leads, and love a godly woman without condition.  Well, this week, Lewis and came to the agreement that a man of God: rejects passivity, accepts responsibility, leads courageously, and  and expects the greater reward. This is completely counter to what the world defines a man to be - essentially a human male .   Being a male is possessing a specific arrangement of chromosomes.  Being a man is a choice. So, this is what he and I agreed upon this weekend as a few godly men surrounded Lewis, prayed for him, and witnessed his decision.  I thank God for what He has done, is doing...
